MUSIC: Congratulations to Angélique Kidjo on Her 2020 Grammy Award

The 2020 edition of the Grammy Awards went down last night and it was a star studded event. One category in particular that most Africans were looking forward to was the Award for Best World Music Album. This was mainly due to the nomination of Nigerian artist and the African Giant himself, Burna Boy. Having an mainstream Afrobeats artist nominated for a Grammy award is a major feat that brings about much excitement in the Afrobeats community. Also nominated was the legendary Benin artist Angélique Kidjo. She is not stranger to the Grammy's, as she has already 3 Grammy awards under her belt. This made her a formidable opponent against Burna Boy in the category.

#MUSICMONDAY: 'Options' by NSG Ft. Tion Wayne

"I make money online, I make money in time!" This my jam bruv!! lol.

While away over the summer, I discovered this song and was immediately hooked! The song is 'Options' by British hip hop group NSG featuring Tion Wayne. I mean was so viral, it was everywhere. Anytime it would come on I would wild out in excitement, that's how serious it was.

Then my question would be, who the hell sings this song? After asking a few people, finally came to learn it was by an emerging young British Hip Hop group NGS, who also had a couple other popular songs over the summer. With my love for their 'Options' track, I am definitely now a fan.

Looks like my boo Idris in jumping more into the music game as a rapper, with his feature in the hot new track 'Boasty' by Wiley x Sean Paul x Stefflon Don. It has always been known that Idris is heavy in the music industry as a DJ, however it's dope to see him switch it up by rapping on a track. As for the song itself, I'm really loving the mixture of the UK grime with dancehall vibe. Also, the young boy playing the main character in the music video is super cute!

MUSIC: 30 Current Top Ghanaian Songs to Add to Your Afrobeats Playlist

I have been meaning to share this ever since I came back from my vacation in Ghana!

As a big time African music lover, or shall I say Afrobeats head (if this is even a thing lol), every year when I go to Ghana I make sure to pay close attention to what songs are poppin'. Although I always try to keep up with the latest and hottest Afrobeats songs from afar in Toronto, there are some limitations to what you can be exposed to online. I find there to be a major difference in ones ability to sense what songs are hot when they are actually in Ghana. You experiences first hand what songs are played the most at parties and on the local radio, what songs artists perform the most at shows as well as feel the crowds reaction each time a song is played. These are things simply listening to songs on YouTube cannot give you.

Furthermore, whenever I get back from vacation in Ghana I have some friends that always ask me to share a playlist of the current songs that were big in GH. Therefore, I thought why not share this on the blog as well!...

Last night was the 2018 MTV European Music Award and Nigerian songstress took home the award for Best African Act. This makes her the first female African artist to do so. Another great accomplishment for an African artist on the international stage and well deserved!

How can a short week feel feel so long! BRUH! This week has been such a busy one. First trying to recover from my long weekend trip to Houston and then coming back to work during our busiest time of the year. I need a break and a nice Afrobeat song to help me relax throughout the weekend. The latest track from Nigerian artist Duncan Mighty featuring Wizkid 'Fake Love' is hitting the right spot right now.

After some time outside the spotlight, Duncan Mighty is back again with a hit track with the help of Wizkid. His most popular hit 'Obianuju' is one or my all time fave Afrobeats songs, so it nice to to see Duncan back again with another a smash hit.

TGIF Y'all!! Friday is finally here, the weather is beautiful outside, what more could one ask for :)

As I prepare for the weekend, I have been grooving a lot to the song 'Uber Driver' by Ghana's Rufftown Records newest artist Wendy Shay. This song has been trending a lot since it came out a couple weeks ago. Of course, there have been a lot of comparisons of her to Singer Ebony who tragically passed away in February and also was a Rufftowns Records artist. However, a lot of the buzz have been about the raunchy lyrics in the song and her play on the work 'Hwe.' If you know, you know hehehe. If you don't know...ask one of your Ghanaian friends lol!
