Fashion Ready Organization, organizers of African Fashion Week Toronto -
the fastest growing diverse Fashion Week in Canada & organizers of
the African Fashion Industry Awards celebrates their 5th year
anniversary and will reveal a big announcement inside one of the
largest museums in North America, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)
August 16th – August 20th 2017
TORONTO, ON (July 19th, 2017) – Join us as we celebrate arts, culture, fashion, style, and diversity at the fifth edition of one of Toronto's most anticipated fashion events, African Fashion Week Toronto (AFWT) presented by the Fashion Ready Organization (FRO). In the last five years, the AFWT platform
has helped to support Toronto’s unique and diverse cultural heritage
whilst contributing to the fashion and tourism market in Canada.
#AFWT2017 starts Wednesday, August 16th with their annual red carpet Opening Media Soiree paired with the Student Designer Competition, featuring live entertainment and a series of 7 local student designers showcasing their debut fashion lines inside the Royal Ontario Museum (100 Queens Park, Toronto) starting at 7:00pm. This year’s 1st and 2nd place winner will receive brand new sewing machines courtesy of AFWT’s official Sewing Machine Sponsor Janome Canada.
From Thursday, August 17th to Saturday, August 19th Toronto
will be home to 30+ high fashion designers from Canada and abroad who
will be showcasing their premium collections inside the ROM. For the 5th year anniversary, AFWT is honored to welcome fashion icons Tanzanian based designer Diana Magesa and New York based Filipino designer John Ablaza to Canada.
On Saturday, August 19th the organization will be celebrating achievements in the Pan-African fashion industry at the African Fashion Industry Awards (#AFIA2017) also inside the ROM. The ceremony will open with a dazzling runway show by Forbes featured local designer Ofuure. #AFIA2017 is proud to honour Grammy nominated and Soul Train Music Awards winning recording artist Jidenna with the 2017 Fashion Icon Award. They will also be honoring Canadian Supermodel and Activist Yasmin Warsame with the 2017 Model Excellence Award. The awards ceremony closes off with a spectacular runway showcase by the “King of Couture” & Celebrity Designer Adebayo Jones. Lastly, there will be a special surprise announcement revealed at the ceremony which you don’t want miss! Red carpet starts at 7:00pm and the award ceremony starts at 8:00pm.
On Sunday, August 20th we will close off AFWT with a fashion exhibition and free sewing machine workshops in partnership with Janome Canada inside the ROM.
